Wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar tuberculose en lepra
Al meer dan 60 jaar geniet Damiaanactie internationale erkenning voor haar medische expertise ten dienste van kwetsbare mensen die getroffen zijn door tuberculose en verwaarloosde tropische huidziektes, zoals lepra en leishmaniasis.
Innovatie en wetenschappelijk onderzoek staan centraal in onze werking, want ze zijn noodzakelijk om ziektes op termijn te elimineren. Voor empirisch onderzoek werken we nauw samen met lokale autoriteiten, volksgezondheidsstructuren, stichtingen en bedrijven, nationale en internationale ngo’s, universiteiten, en onderzoeksinstellingen.
Onderzoeksthema’s
Onze onderzoeken omvatten zowel technologische innovaties (instrumenten voor geografische data-analyse, artificiële intelligentie, nieuwe diagnosemethoden …) als preventie, diagnose, behandeling (voornamelijk inzake bijwerkingen en resistentie tegen geneesmiddelen), en wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar het versterken van gezondheids- en zorgsystemen, de rehabilitatie van getroffen mensen en hun sociaaleconomische re-integratie.
Wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar antimicrobiële resistentie bij tuberculose
Damiaanactie doet uitgebreid operationeel onderzoek naar antimicrobiële resistentie bij tuberculose, onder meer in Niger, Bangladesh, Nigeria en Guinee. Om de verspreiding van resistente stammen wereldwijd aan te pakken, gaan we op zoek naar snellere diagnosemethoden en alternatieve behandelschema’s.
Wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar preventieve behandelingen tegen lepra
Op de Comoren voert Damiaanactie samen met het Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde in Antwerpen baanbrekend onderzoek naar preventieve behandelingen tegen lepra. Door nauwe contacten van mensen met lepra antibiotica toe te dienen, konden we het risico dat zij de ziekte ook zouden ontwikkelen, met maar liefst 44% verminderen. Deze preventieve aanpak wordt ook toegepast in Senegal, de Democratische Republiek Congo en Bolivia.
